I created this series of 10 thoughtful, small collages inspired by human courage and resilience of so many people across the globe determined to pick up the pieces and move forward after experiencing loss from natural disasters, Each collage injects hope as it empathizes with a different aspect of loss.
Through conversations and social media polls, I explored different areas of loss experienced by natural disasters, including my own. The following were subjects that came up repeatedly and gave direction to these 10 small works: loss of health/injury, economic hardship, traumatic injuries, homelessness/property loss/displacement, famine, grief, heritage disconnection, hope, time, mental & emotional states. The materials I worked with were carefully curated for each piece. Many of the materials have been collected over the years and some even came from my own losses experienced in a natural disaster–fragments of objects, fabrics, pictures, collectables, little bits and pieces of ephemera which I used to inject interesting meaning, colors and textures to complete the story. Several of these called for a ladder symbol. This is a symbol that has come through my work for several years now. It is a symbol of hope. A symbol that we can climb out of anything if we choose to make that first step. My intention is to sensitize so we keep present the fact that many in the world today are struggling and everything is difficult, and natural disasters keep increasing. Our responsibility is to at least acknowledge that, what we do beyond that, is up to each of us. I truly believe awareness helps keep the harmony and the balance, and actions from that awareness move the world in a forward direction. Thank you for taking a look at these.
